Tooth Extraction Aftercare Guidelines
Essential post-operative instructions to promote fast, comfortable clot formation and healing after tooth removal.
Post-Treatment Care
Protecting the Healing Blood Clot
After a tooth extraction, a protective blood clot forms in the empty socket to stop bleeding and initiate natural bone and gum healing. Following these simple steps will ensure smooth recovery and prevent a painful condition called "dry socket".
First 24 Hours β Crucial Rules:
- Bite Firmly on Gauze: Keep gentle pressure on the provided gauze pad for 20β30 minutes to stop initial oozing.
- Do NOT Rinse or Spit Forcefully: Vigorous rinsing or spitting will dislodge the delicate blood clot.
- Avoid Drinking Straws: Suction from straws can pull the clot out of the socket.
- No Smoking or Alcohol: Strictly avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 48 hours to prevent infection and dry socket.
- Eat Soft Foods: Stick to lukewarm soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Avoid crunchy, hard, or hot foods.
After 24 Hours β Warm Saltwater Rinses:
- Gently bathe the socket with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in warm water) after meals.
- Brush remaining teeth gently, taking special care around the extraction site.
